Callanan: tax hike threatens North East pubs

Above-inflation hikes in beer duty and business rate on local pubs from next month

Labour Ministers were today accused of snatching money from local community pubs. As the Government announced plans for a £4 million fund supposedly to help struggling pubs, new analysis has revealed how taxes are soaring by far more on local pubs from April. Official figures show there has been a net closure of 3,500 pubs across England since 1997.
