CONSERVATIVES STRONG SHOWING GAINS THEM SECOND PLACE IN NORTH EAST

Newly re-elected Conservative Euro MP Martin Callanan praised the efforts of party workers and thanked voters as the Conservatives topped the poll in Tynedale and Castle Morpeth and performed strongly across the region in the European elections. Despite a strong challenge from UKIP the Conservatives maintained the second seat on the parliamentary list and remain the main opposition to Labour in the North East region.

Speaking this morning Martin Callanan said:

'This is a good result for the Conservatives and clearly demonstrates that we are the main opposition to Labour here in the North East. It is a tremendous honour to be the North East's representative in the European Parliament and I commit myself to continuing in my endeavours to put Britain first, to halt the stream of regulations, red tape and bureaucracy that emanates from Brussels and to ensure that we do not get a federalist constitution thrust upon us.'

'At the next General Election the electorate will have a clear choice between a Labour government that wants Britain to be part of a country called Europe, and a Conservative government that will halt progress towards further European integration.'
