EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION - NOT IN MY NAME

North East Conservative MEP Martin Callanan will be campaigning this week against the proposed European Constitution. As MEPs gather in Strasbourg to rubber stamp the proposal for a European Constitution, Martin Callanan, along with other Conservative MEPs, is stepping up his campaign of opposition.

A number of campaign events have been planned including the wearing of 'Not In My Name' T-shirts and the exhibiting of similarly titled banners outside the parliament offices. There will also be the unveiling of a constitution monster highlighting the fundamentally undemocratic nature of the constitution.

Speaking in Strasbourg today Martin said:

'Obviously these are lighted-hearted stunts designed to draw attention to our cause, but they have a serious message behind them which is that we do not want this integrationist constitution.

'Back in October last year Tony Blair totally ignored the clear and unambiguous will of the British public by ratifying the Treaty on the European Constitution and the Brussels elite are now treating with contempt the democratic processes of the member states of the EU. There is even a hugely expensive two-day party (costing around £300,000) to celebrate the vote in the parliament, and this is even before one ballot paper has been marked in a single national referendum.

Martin continued:

'The fact remains that if any one of the nations that is holding a referendum, such as UK, France, Spain, Portugal or the Netherlands, reject the proposal then the whole constitution package collapses. It is perhaps a little premature, to say nothing of distasteful, for the champions of this grandiose scheme to be quaffing champagne before the people of Europe have had their say.'
